I have an older Dell "laptop". It's a Smartstep 100N, and I wanted to upgrade the memory from 128MB to 512MB.

I am currently running Windows XP Home on it, and from reading around it sounds like the minimum you should have is 512mb.

My problem is this. For me to upgrade to 512, I need to remove the standard memory. To do this it says I need an authorized service center because the socket can not be accessed by the end user. Is this their way of scaring you to spend more money on them installing it, or is this something that can be done by the average "Joe"??

I did open up the back where the open memory card slot is, and I do not see the other standard memory card, so I assume that is hidden somewhere in the laptop.

Any advice for a first time poster??

That page only shows the open slot to upgrade on memory, but it does not show you how to remove the standard memory card. There are 2 slots.

I was hoping somebody here did this procedure and can tell me where to find the extra standard memory card.

That did the trick Net. Thank you very much!!

So far I only upped it from 128 to 256, and it made a HUGE difference. Now I am out to get another 256 card to max out my dinosaur of a laptop.

    Thanks again.
