I will buy a new laptop soon...The base model comes with a 900p screen and i3-4000m. Should I get the 1080p with the same processor or upgrade to the i5-4200m while keeping the 900p resolution? If I upgrade both then it will cost too much. I will be using my laptop for web browsing. reading ebooks and gaming.

Get a 15-inch laptop with both.

I know that isn't one of the options, but the i3s are so anemic and 900p at 17" just seems silly or masochistic.

For gaming? CPU upgrade first. Your FPS will also be lower with the higher-resolution screen.

    Laptop specs?

The model is Idepad Z710 with GT745M (DDR3) with 4 GB ram (which I will upgrade post-purchase). It's either this or asus N56VV (1080p) with i5-3230M and GT750M (DDR3) which is slightly more expensive

If you're going to be gaming, you'll want as much power as you can get for the lowest resolution you can get, but depending on how much you're gaming vs everything else, I'd pick up the 1080p and i5.

The Asus is a better buy if it isn't much more expensive (20 dollars?).

I'd get the Asus as well, the 750M won't run everything maxed, but it'll still give alright performance.

Thanks for your replies everybody! The i5 with 1080p would be around 120 (!) dollars more and the Ideapad with 900p and i5 would be 75 dollars more. Confused :frown:
