    Hi,

Just upgraded to a 9600m gt and ran 3dmark06 to test it, however temps are reaching 105c, I don't think this is normal?

From searching around it seems most peoples cards are maxing at 85c, havn't found anyone posting temps as high as mine.

It's not an ES card and I installed new heatpads which as far as I can tell are seated properly. I monitored the temps using both Rivatuner and Everest.
I've tried two different drivers and currently am running 179.48.
The GPU has it's own heatpipe also

Can anyone suggest a solution/reason why the high temps or maybe I'm missing something when I installed the card or is there something I can check?

    Thanks! :)

EDIT: Solved- out of frustration I ditched the thermal pad from the gpu die and applied a thick layer of AS5 to fill the gap- max temps are now 72c so must've been the crap thermal pad :(

That was my first thought. Thermal pads are not as good as the thermal paste. I had the same problem with my HD3650, but in order to apply thermal paste I had to do copper mod and hello temperature decrease :D

Hi triturbo, yup so glad I actually found the problem! May do the copper mod at some point as there is a fair gap between the gpu and heatsink.

Out of curiousity did you use thermal adhesive to hold the copper shim in place or just normal thermal compound? And is there a difference between different types of copper- was looking at fleabay and saw a sheet rated 'C101', from looking this appeared suitable?

Thanks again, it's great to have so many knowledgable people to learn from :)

I thought that there is no gap in 6930G. Mine has a gap because the GPU is placed upside-down (means the GPU is facing the mainboard, while the CPU is facing the bottom cover) and has 4 little "legs" that keeps the GPU's core about 1mm away from the heatsink. Anyway, I followed this great guide: Copper Mod, but instead of 1.5mm thick sheet, I bought this one: COPPER SHEET 100mm x 100mm x 0.9mm C106 Half Hard. The placement - heatsink (upside-down remember :) ) -> MX-2 thermal paste -> copper sheet 16 x 16 x 0.9 mm -> MX-2 thermal paste -> GPU :D

Hey thats a great guide thxs :)

The gpu on mine faces down also towards the MB, I did a rough measurement and actually ordered the same copper sheet as you, except in the .3mm thickness which hopefully will bridge the gap enough, if not I'll get a bit thicker.

Did the copper mod have a significant affect on your temps?

It was a 9300M GS originally MexicanSnake

It was cheaper for me to buy the notebook with the 9300 then upgrade it than it was to buy one with a 9600M GT already installed

Nice!!! I guess that it was a HUGE jump in performance! I mean more than twice! you should run 3dmark06 to see the difference :).

I'm just happy the upgrade worked actually!!! Ya havn't had a chance to bench it properly as still tweaking the o/s.
Once I get the copper mod done, thanks to TriTurbo's suggestion, I may even try to oc the card, something I've never actually done before

Thanks I'll check it out and will definatley post back once I get it all sorted :D

Don't have any tips on how to unlock my bios so I can overclock my X9100 do you? Don't think it's possible but someone more experienced might be able tell me if it is or not?

    No problem :)

Whoa, thats mine setup as well. I thought that since 6920G uses "normal" setup, it would be the same for 6930G. Here is mine:

    HELL YEAH :D Like 15-20 degrees :D

Yeah, same as me HD3470 -> HD3650 made quite big difference :D Now I'm expecting that HD4670 would make HELL of a difference :D

Hmm I'm a noob I guess but I can't figure out how to work the multi-quote!

But anyway, triturbo your cpu heatsink is far more substantial than mine by the looks of it. I can't wait to do the copper mod and hopefully I'll have as much success as you did :)
