Looks like upgrade a Core Duo laptop to Core 2 Duo (Merom) is feasible.
(I backed up all the bios versions from Dell already, just in case they'll pull them.)
So I found a few links:

People were already upgrading Core Duo laptops to Core 2 Duo's before Merom ever released the other day. We've definitely established that the install will work if your BIOS is updated to support Merom but the only question is whether it will void your laptop warranty when you do the upgrade and it likely will.

Well make sure you keep your old processor in this case, and if something should happen, you put it back in before shipping.
Most of my dell laptops weren't tagged with "warranty void" sticker, but the last one I bought was the 9100. Dunno about the 6400/9400 series.
I'm about to grab a 9400 as soon as I confirm with my rep the price of a standalone quadro to stick it in there. -
If you're going to put a quadro in it why not just get one of the Latitude business notebooks instead of the 9400?

But wouldn't the BIOS be different between two different processors?
Or am I just lacking the knowings of processors?
-
The BIOS is stored on the mainboard, so swapping CPUs wouldn't affect it at all.
If you reinstall the old CPU before sending the laptop back, the manufacturer has no way of knowing that a Merom was used in it. They could tell that you updated the BIOS to one which supported Merom, but that could have been done for lots of reasons. -

Well, now I know.

Quadro is an Nvidia Workhorse Graphics Card

But, the only Quad Cores that'll be out this year, by indeed Intel, and probably around November, will only be for desktops, with the power drain and such.
Upgrade to Core 2 Duo evidence !
