    Hi all,

I bought a laptop from pcspecialist here in the UK and it came with the following specs:

    Operating System
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit

    CPU
    Intel Core i3 4170 @ 3.70GHz 50 °C
    Haswell 22nm Technology

    RAM
    12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)

    Motherboard
    Clevo P770ZM-G (SOCKET 0)

    Graphics
    Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@75Hz)
    2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M (CLEVO/KAPOK Computer) 47 °C

    Storage
    465GB TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050 (SATA) 28 °C

    Optical Drives
    No optical disk drives detected

    Audio
    Realtek High Definition Audio

(Specs were taken from speccy program)

I am wondering if i can upgrade my processor to an i7 decent enough for gaming and possibly the graphics card to a nvidia gtx 980m.

I have seen on youtube other people with these setups on the same p770zm_g motherboard, but after emailing pcspecialist they said the motherboard cant handle an i7 processor...... this confused me.

I opened the laptop up and it has a desktop cpu, which i presume means it can be upgraded.

I am lost at this point and require someone with better knowledge than myself and pcspecialist to clear things up for me.

So a i7 4790 and a gtx 1070 pascal card would be a decent setup?

    ah okay.

it is the only photo i have without dismantling her again.

the 1070 looks too wide on the left edge on its own, thats without the right edge that sticks out. The current on that is in there is a clean rectangle. There is not much space either side. the 1060 looks almost identical shape/size wise from the images, just hope it is so the cooling sits back on the same.

mate, i really appreciate your help. i have learned something new in the process.

will update pictures or something when i get the parts and start upgrading.

Just bear in mind you're upgrading from a 54W CPU to an 84W one - the cooling system designed for the i3 may not be sufficient to keep the i7 cool for long.

    Thanks again.

I'l have a look at de lidding video after work .. hopefully it' not too difficult, wouldn' want to break such an expensive part.

I guess delidding and upping the fan speeds a tad is the way to go? Just to be safe.

you'd be better off getting the MSI 1060 since it's more robust than the gecube 1060 or even the Eurocom 1060.

Do you have a direct link to the correct one say the 1060 msi as recommended. I searched yesterday and was just getting confused again at which were the right/best ones?

Buying the cpu is easy enough.

    Hello,

Did you succeed in upgrading your Clevo with a MSI 1060 MXM?

I would really like to know as well, since its the equivalent of the P7 Pro and I am seriously pondering also trying the NVME->PCI-E->GPU route if swapping the MXM GPU to a 10xx series is not possible.

If you have an eDP panel, there should be nothing stopping you, check the Forum with MXM upgraded laptops or Eurocoms website

I can't seem to locate LVDS vs eDP in Aida64, but Optronics B173HW01 Monitor ID AUO149D when googling seems to point to LVDS.

So I guess I would have to upgrade both the panel and the GPU. is there any 4K or anything over1080P panels for this P770ZM laptop?

Eurocom website is totally useless for that, and support always pushes in the future with no promises since 2 yrs, twitter account that proudly adds every competing laptop on the planet being supported except their own P7, and all of them never could reply if it was electrically and BIOS-ly viable. Very frustrating experience. Also the head sink seems to be a potential issue but that I don't care, I'm ready to mod the case or whatever is needed.

Good thing there are forums like here to help out.
