I am currently using HP dv6560 with Core 2 Duo T7300 processor and 2GB Corsair 667 MHz RAM with Windows Vista Home Premium.
I have oberved that most of the time more than 70% of my RAM is being consumed by the system.
Is it necessary to upgrade the RAM to 4 GB for better speed and performance?

No its not, Vista just uses RAM when it has it available, if you had less ram it would use less ram, if you install more ram it will use more ram.

You wouldnt have a problem until ram use was 100% and causing page file.

I think you have the intel X3100, so you should make sure you have a dual channel ram setup. Whether 2 x 1gb sticks or 2 x 2gb sticks.

That will give you the best graphics performence.

You should still notice a speed increase, especially if you multitask. RAM is pretty cheap these days, and if your going to upgrade to Windows 7 it'll be nice to have. Of course, then there's the issue of if you have 64 bit...

64-bit isn't that much of an issue IMO since it's pretty easy to obtain and you can use your 32-bit key with it...

He'd have to reinstall the OS too, if he wants to do that. Plus backing everything up.

I guess it's not a big deal to me since I do reinstall regularly using an automated VLite install to multiple computers. I have my data on a separate partition and regularly backup that to a separate external storage.

Not to get OT here, but most ppl don't do that lol. Reinstalling can be a pain for most.
