    hi there ...

I am considering the R4000 Compaq w/ AMD Sempron 3200 +. I am impressed with this machine. Very good build, great technology curve ....and super value for the money.

...My question Re: replacing the AMD Sempron for the AMD Athlon 64 (both socket 754). Is this a relatively straight-forward task ..? should i even be considering this exchange ..? **Maybe the Sempron should be amble. From the articles (reviews), the Sempron is a great processing chip.

..I am considering this for the "stepped-up" added power of the Athlon...and save money by purchasing the CPU myself ...as opposed to bundled in the R4025. (Save about $250 CDN)

    What do you think ..?

Yes, I think you can...they use socket 939 not socket 754. The Sempron used by HP is also Socket 939, so upgrading should not be a problem although I dont think there will be vast difference for general use. Maybe you will notice the performance difference when the cpu is pushed to the limit.

running XP (32 bit) you will not notice much of a preformance improvement. However if you decide to upgrade to Windows XP x64 (voids warranty) you will notice almost doubling speed of 32 bit apps running in the WoW emulator (windows on windows 32 bit emulator). This is because Windows XP, being a 32 bit OS cannot take advantage of using 64 bits/cycle, however XP x64 can, and running 64 bits/cycle for a 32 bit app the emulator doubles the load signifigantly reducing HDD load times and RAM load times. Lastly, XP x64 can support up to 128 GB of physical RAM (needed?) and up to i believe 7 terabytes of virtual memory. i EXTREMLY doubt you will ever be able to put those on your r4000 (good notebook, i have one too) as nobody makes that much ram in SODIMM form (or any SDRAM form), but if you are fancy with RAID devices you may achieve the lots of virtual memory capability :p
