Hi. I've been reading other people's posts on here and everyone seems to be really helpful, so hopefully someone can help me out.
I am wanting to do a few upgrades to my Asus G51vx.

First, I am wanting to upgrade the ram. I am going to stick with 4GB, using 2x2gb.
    My laptop uses 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz 200pin.
    I want to upgrade to 2x2Gb DDR2 800MHz 200pin SDRAM.
Here is what I'm thinking of getting:
    2GB 800MHz PC2-6400 DDR2 Laptop SDRAM
Will this work? Also, will it make any noticeable difference?

Second, I am wanting to upgrade my hard drive.
It's currently using a 320GB(way more than I need) SATAII hard drive.
I want to upgrade to a SSD. Here is what I am thinking of getting:
Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex Plus R2 VTXPLR2-25SAT2-60GB 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    Will this work?

I will really appreciate all help I get. I am also open to any suggestions. Thank you in advance for helping me out.

    -Garrett

also interested in SSD upgrade, I can't get rid of this computer yet. :)

What about the GTX260? Possible to upgrade this card for to a cooler, newer DX11 card?

I've also thought about upgrading the graphics card, but my current one works fine, and I know any card I get wil run pretty warm on my laptop. I've read about the quick performance times in boot up and other areas from SSDs and thought it would be the most beneficial upgrade. I know the jump from 320 to 60 sounds extreme, but I know I don't use much at all.

You cannot upgrade gfx cards in Asus laptops. They use a reverse M3M pinout, which is proprietary. No one who owns an Asus G-Series (as far as I am aware) can upgrade their cards, unless you find a newer card with the same pinout. It is almost impossible.

Just to clarify, not all off this is true. You can upgrade gfx cards in Asus laptops, even to non Asus cards; eg G73. Non all of Asus laptops use reverse pin-out. Asus G51vx is probably one of them as well: http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/47098.jpg. The problem is that no one probably try to check on Asus with mxm II slot, if other cards in proper mxm II form factor would work, like had that place with mxm B in G73. And there's off course problem with mounting screws holes and heatsink. In other words this subject is mostly grey area. And even if someone will manage to try and make it actually work in eg this laptop, there was only one card more powerful then gtx260m released in mxm II form factor - gtx280, and that's not a big upgrade anyway. Summarize - theoretically it might be possible but practically it's probably not worth of efforts.

Thanks for the information fellas. If I could find a gtx280, I may consider alongside a SSD upgrade. I guess I should also find a new proc.

You could upgrade the core BGA with a reball. The 112 shader core of the GTX 260m is g92-751-b1, the 128 shader core of the gtx 280m is g92-761-b1.

I recently just upgraded my p7350 CPU to a t9600 and overclocked to 3.2GHz. It made a pretty major difference in gaming performance and games that used to not be playable at minimum settings (Tribes: Ascend, X3) are now run perfectly. Arma 2 even runs surprisingly well, only occasionally dropping below 30FPS in really heavy fights. It's an incredibly easy upgrade and in my opinion is worth the money (about $60 on eBay).

I'm going to re-apply the thermal pads to my GPU and throw on some better thermal paste once it shows up in the mail, and then I'll be making some YouTube videos of the performance gains. If you're interested, keep en eye out, I'll edit this post once I upload them.

hey guys, I have one question about my Asus G51VX. My screen would change colors here and there and it is quite annoying. However, I was told that I need to replace my video card, and so my current video card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M - 1.0 GB GDDR3 SDRAM. I'd like to know which card I can replace it with.. I was thinking of the same card but I can't seem to find it but this one result that I believe is similar, I just want to make sure that it is the right one. I was hoping you guys can help me with that please? This is the one result I found: Amazon.com : ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 2DVI PCI-Express Video Card ENGTX260HTDI896MD3 : Computer Graphics Cards : Computers & Accessories

I want to upgrade my processor too and looked at that same one so im glad you had good luck with it. So far all I have done is swapped out the LCD for a high def AUO model which I really like but did back off the resolution one notch to make it better for everyday use. 1920x1080 was just too small for me to look at all the time. I also replaced the thermal pads on the GPU with some that had a high thermal conductivity.

My problem now is the battery won't hold a charge so im at a loss at a decent replacement that doesn't cost a fortune. All my searches on ebay are pretty uneventful since I dont know how the battery quality is from various vendors.

Edited to add: On the GPU from what I have read the ASUS 260M is your only real option from how its made. I wanted to upgrade mine but found that out. So I think your best bet is just to check ebay for a used one.

yea GPU upgrade would not be worth it anyway quite expensive, for my G51vx I got 8gb ram small 128gb ssd and upgrade processor, i forget which one exactly but am able to OC both the 260m and CPU to decent speeds. If you cant get the performance you want out of that then you should just look into getting a new system.
