First of all, I have no real idea what BIOS is / does, although I have read posts on this forum that updates can resolve hardware and software problems (for example, fan control?).

So really, since I've never even touched my BIOS before, should I be upgrading it? There are about 10 updates available on Acer's website and I have no idea whether to jump straight to the most recent or do them in sequence. I don't know how to update either ("flashing" the BIOS apparently!)

I thought that by updating the BIOS I might benefit from certain tweaks that the manufacturer makes to the way fans etc. are controlled, so hopefully resulting in a more stable (and better performing) system?

    Thanks!

If you are not sure of what you are doing, don't do it.If something bad happens mid way you will have to change your motherboard.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I would not upgrade the bios, it is not necessary. It is only necessary to do so, if you want to upgrade to a processor which was released a few months after you bought your system, which still uses the same socket/chipset.

I would only install new drivers for audio, video, networking, as they can be upgraded very easily.
Also you do not have to install any drivers, if your system is working fine as it is.

What's your current BIOS version?

Acer fix some Fan controlling/WiFi/AHCI/Power issues with newer bios revisions ,so upgrading is recommended . :)

First search forum acer section for " Acer Aspire 5920 Bios updates" :D

I've got the very original BIOS that came with my laptop when I bought it last October. Not really sure how to find out the version number. But you're right bigspin, I did hear that the newer BIOS versions did something to the fans and wifi - do you know whether it is worthwhile to upgrade? I was thinking that the fans would be a major fix or something, perhaps to sort out any overheating problems. Could you give any details on the fan/wifi/ahci/power changes?

I'm still looking for a guide on how to update - probably turn to google now!

EDIT: Found my BIOS version - 1.3708 released 08/15/2007
