    I was recently considering upgrading the processor in my XPS 1710 from a T7200 to a T7600. Is this possible to do? What would it involve beyond opening the computer and slapping it in? Where would you recomend purchasing a processor from? Thanks!

    You may want to open it up tpsee if you can get to the CPU & that the CPU is removable.

    Hello,

    This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach. The very first thing that you will want to do is make sure that your computer's bios is up to date. You can download and install the latest bios here.

    The XPS 1710 can be upgraded with the following processors.

    - T2700 2.33GHz, 2MB, Yonah, Dual Core

    - T7600G 2.33GHz, 4MB, Merom

    - T7600 2.33GHz, 4MB, Merom

    You can use this link to assist you with the installation of the processor.

    Best of luck,

    Richard B

    How much ram does your laptop have and what is the spindle speed(4200 rpm/5400rpm/7200rpm) of your hdd?

    Make sure you max out your ram and hdd speed before considering a CPU upgrade.

    RAM currently has 1 gig, and a 5400 rpm HDD.

    Right now I'm looking at upgrading the RAM to 2 gig, put a 7200 RPM HDD in, swaping the processor the the the T6700 (I hear the T7600G thing is a COMPLETE waste of money), and upgrading the Video card to the 7950 GTX when the prices drop a bit. By the way, are we looking at a drop in processor prices soon?

    Sorry to barge in like this - but I have another question -

    Is it posible to exchange my cpu T2500 (in my XPS 1710) with this cpu T7500?
    I'm asking because the price of the T7600 here in Denmark is about twice as high as the T7500!

    No.

    De bruger anderledes stick og er en anden serie

    t5500, t5600, t7200, t7400, t7600
    Merom = 667 Mhz FSB 945P chipset

    t7100, t7300, t7500 t7700/7800
    Penryn = 800Mhz FSB 965 chipset

    Maybe different name but you can only swap processors in the same series or downgrade to celerons...

    I would recommend against a processor upgrade. If your main tasks are not processor dependant, then such a upgrade is a waste of time and money. Even if they are processor intensive, you have to weigh the price of the upgrade, against the performance gained. The T7200 used to have the best price to performance ratio, and its still a very fast processor. Going to a T7600 may not provide a massive boost in performance.

    So you would recomend me to find a cheaper one like the T7200 or the T7400?

    Will I be able to feel a difference from the T2500 (Core duo -> Core2 Duo), they are both about 2 Ghz???

    I use my 1710 to play games like WOW and games like that - and some photo editing with photoshop CS3.

    Very little in photoshop, 2mb extra cache will be handy though, but not worth 200$ IMO.
    Other than that they support 64-bit OS meaning that they can use more than 3 gigs of ram...
