Hi All,
I have recently ordered R61e. The R61e comes with Celeron 530 (1.73GHz) & Intel GL960 Chipset.
I would like to upgrade to C2D CPU (T5300/T5200).
The two CPU's have different Stepping (L2 Vs B2). What does it signifies?

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9VP
Are these CPU's compatible with Intel GL950 Chipset?
Should I go for CoreDuo (T2350/T2450) or Core2Duo(T5300/T5200)?
Thanks
Sandy

u cannot use CoreDuo since they are Socket M cpus. t5200 and t5300 usually come as Socket M too. You need a Socket P cpu.

You need a Socket P CPU. Any Socket P Celeron and Socket P Pentium Dual-Core is pretty much guaranteed to work. Socket P Core 2 Duos with a 667MHz FSB have a good chance of working, but Socket P Core 2 Duos with an 800MHz FSB are more of a crap shot.

t5270 and t5470 are OEM only. You can buy them only if someone will pull them out of a laptop and sell on ebay

Thanks for all the replies.
I am little bit confused...Initially I though that Celeron CPU in R61e is Socket M.
How to check what type of Socket it has? Is there any software to check it.
Also Celeron M 530 is available in both socket types (M & P) as per information given on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Celeron_microprocessors#.22Merom-1024.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_65_nm.29
SL9VA -> Socket M
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9VA
SLA2G -> Socket P
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLA2G
As per the intel website, information for both the processor is same except Bus/Core ratio.
I though that any CPU with FSB 533 MAY work on R61e, so I was looking for T5200/T5300.
Thanks

GL960 is only coupled to Socket P. Since you've got GL960, you've gotta have Socket P.
I did not know that the 530 was available in Socket M and P flavors though. That's news to me. -
get CpuZ and see what it tells you

I just saw these two posts on forum about GL960 CPU upgrade & C2D with 667 FSB seems to be working.

Hi All,
Just received my R61e & I am surprised to see that the Chipset is GM965.
As per the IBM Japan website, the chipset is GL960 http://www-06.ibm.com/jp/pc/notebooks/thinkpad/r-series/r61e_lineup_cto.shtml#7650J34
But Vista displays it as GM965.
So which one is correct?
CPUZ Details
------------
1. Package - Socket 479 mPGA
2. Chipset - Intel, GM965, Rev C0
I can upgrade to C2D processors now
Thanks
Sandy
