I'm thinking about upgrading my current 100 GB Toshiba MK1032GSX hard drive on my Dell E1505 laptop. I'm not sure about compatibility issues with buying other models and sizes. I want the largest, fastest hard drive available.

From looking around the internet I'm highly considering the 500 GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. Would this be compatible with my laptop? Are there any other hard drives out there I should look into?

Also how hard is it to transfer the data from my old drive to a new one?

I have the E1505, and it supports the higher capacity harddrives. The system can work with any sata 2.5" notebook harddrive which is 9.5mm thick.
I have a Hitachi 7K320 in mine now, but if you want more capacity, the 500gb western digital blue will be a good alternative.

For data transfer, you can use Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost or the old way, copying all of the files through an external harddrive/network, and than install all of your programs one by one.
The acronis imaging software is available as a trial version on Acronis' website.

Thank you for all that info. I've never upgraded a laptop so I'm unsure of what would fit inside so that's good to hear. I can't wait to upgrade my hard drive since it's been full for quite a while.

To clone the hard drive I'll need an external hard drive enclosure right? Is there one you might recommend or would any do?
