    Hi,

    I have just got a HP Compaq 6720s with a Intel® Celeron® Processor 540 (1.86 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache) processor.

Other models of this have the Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile CPU T5250. Would it be possible to upgrade the CPU in this laptop?

    Thanks.

For the effort and possibly heat and compatibility problems your going to get I dont think its worth it, plus mobile cpus are arround £200 which is extortionate.

You'r best bet would be upgrading memory and removing some processes, or selling the laptop and getting a new one.

It should be possible to upgrade the CPU. It's just some HP laptops hide their CPU in the very center of the notebook that you'll have to take everything apart in order to reach the CPU. The DV9540us that i had took forever to have its cpu upgraded.

Why T5250 of all cpu? I have a spare one for sell if you're interested.

Heat compatibillity isn't really any issues as normally they produce the same amount of heat, for example T5600 produces as much heat as T7600. (1.83Ghz vs 2.33Ghz)

And these cpu's arent so expensive if you buy them on ebay for example. I got my T7600 for $120, usualy it's around $400-700. And i just sold my T5600 for $90.. So it's really not that expensive!

I think it will work fine, but I think the chipset is Mobile Intel® GLE960 Express, which apparently only supports Celerons...

Will dual core work with my chipset?

Doesn't seem to support others than celerons, sorry!

Officially the GL960 only supports Celerons and to a lesser extent, Pentium Dual-Cores. Nonetheless, a good number of people have upgraded to Socket P 667MHz FSB Core 2 Duos and to a lesser extent, Socket P 800MHz FSB Core 2 Duos. In other words, there is a good chance that any Socket P processor with an FSB less than or equal to 800MHz will work with the GL960.

A Celeron is guaranteed to work, a Pentium Dual-Core is guaranteed to work, a 667MHz FSB C2D is almost guaranteed to work, and an 800MHz FSB C2D has a high probability of working. I've not heard of a GL960 failing a 667MHz FSB C2D upgrade, but I have heard of a GL960 failing an 800MHz FSB C2D upgrade.

The aforementioned T5250 should work fine.

What is the difference between GLE960 and GL960? Do you know?

Looking at intel data sheet GLE960 only supports 533Mhz FSB and celerons, but it may work anyways as you say. But you're mentioning GL960 and not GLE960?

GLE960 and GL960 are the same thing, though the GLE960 has an extra TV-Out feature.
