I have a HP Pavilion dv9500t series and would like to put in a much better CPU. I currentally have an Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5450 (1.66 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB). To my knowledge this is a Socket P processor. I would like to replace it with an Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800. This is the best Intel Core 2 processor for laptops with the Socket P choice. Can I just pull out my old processor and put the new one in? Or am I going to run into system BIOS issues, heat issues, and motherboard chipset compatability issues? If you have insite or experience with replacing laptop CPU's to a faster choice, your help would be great. thanks.

You would most likely encounter heat and BIOS issues. The X7800 is rated with a TDP of 44W compared to the regular Core 2 Duo's 35W limit. The cooling system might not handle the extra heat. The BIOS might or might not support it. You could probably opt for the T7700 which should be supported by the BIOS and remain within the thermal design of the notebook.

May I ask why you want to upgrade the CPU? Is the T5450 a bottleneck for you?
If you could post the rest of your system specifications that would be great. Also, do not cross post again - it is not allowed. Read the forum rules . . . -
