I have some questions about upgrading my harddrive.

Right now i have a 100 gig harddrive (well...86 gigs technically) and i have a few programs on it that take up space. and it seems that even with no documents at all, just the programs, i have 10 gigs left(used to be 20+ gigs left, but vista decided to just knock off 13 gigs of space for ****s and giggles IDK.)

so i was thinking nows about time to upgrade to a larger harddrive. so first, i plan on dualbooting vista and Leopard (i wanna get my feet wet with final cut). So i was thinking of this harddrive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136123

Would this do the trick? im not sure how to judge those reviews, so i thought id ask here since you guys know your ****. rigt now i have an ibm thinkpad t61 with what i think is a 7200rpm(not quite sure) 100 gig hdd.

Another question would be. What would be the best way to transfer my information from harddrive to harddrive? I have heard that making an image of everything and installing that on the new one. but is there a better way? itd be nice not to have to do all the programs again and do all the hoopla.

please do not bump your thread more than once in 24 hours.

that hard drive should be fine. i am currently using the same hard drive and it is essentially very quiet except that it has periodic clicks. it may be smarter to get the western digital passport 250gb because it comes already in the enclosure and costs almost the same.

for copying your contents, i suggest getting the trial version of acronis. it will make an exact copy of your hd onto your new hd. then remove the hd from the enclosure and install it.

    Steggy, calm down

First of all you can reclaim much of the data which vista caches to.
Simply go to my computer. Right click the harddrive, and go to properties. In the properties, select disc cleanup. When the disc cleanup loads, check everything in the box, and hit okay. It will take 3-4 minutes or so to delete all of the temprary files vista splurges all over the drive. Then after that has finished, run disc cleanup again. This time go into advanced, and delete all of the restore points. This will help cleanup about 10 Gb of space.

DO this first before buying a new harddrive.

Tell us how much space you have left

yea, sorry bout that, i usually delete bumps whenever i make them once the job is done haha.

and thank you for the suggestions, ill give them a look see and give the whole dualboot a shot haha. hopefully leopard is nice to my thinkpad, i dont wanna have to switch over to the 100 gig again then do a lot more hoopla haha

k tron, ive already done that. you have no idea.

i HAD 25 gigs left. had.

    i downloaded a 60 mb file.

    8 gigs left.

disc cleanup does nothing unfortunately. i dont even know if i want vista. if it does anything remotely close to that on the other harddrive im going to delete it and just use xp and leopard instead and just intsall the programs all over. vista annoys the hell out of me.

im not sure if its vista or if i have some sort of ultimately annoying virus or what. i have avg, it doesnt detect any virus, so idk. well.. its detected some severnet.exe a few times but got rid of that.

oh, i have one more question left.

i was considering just starting out fresh with reinstalling vista or w/e. im pretty positive that i have a partition on the system that has the oem or w/e on it. how do i go about burning that to a data cd?

I wouldnt get an external, and I wouldnt buy a new laptop harddrive.

You have disc cleaned and such.

    Okay, now what to do.

If you are thinking about installing leopard, than why dont you just install XP?
Xp is a far better and much more stable operating system than Vista.

If you plan on installing Leopard, back up all of your data, and just fresh format with leopard.
The harddrive will format to about 88Gb of space.

If you buy a new harddrive, you have to install an operating system anyways.
Just fresh format and install XP or leopard, and everything will be fine.

im going to install leopard solely for final cut.

id like to xp, and i still might at some point. but i need a bigger harddrive anyways. so w/e ill just get the laptop hdd and fresh install.

but still, how do i make the vista reinstallation cd out of my partition? itd be nice to have since lenovo was nice enough not to send a cd.

the urls you linked are both the same thing, right? and yes, that was what i was talking about. you just need to pry off the plastic. it's held together by some clasps and some glue. i used an old credit card at the seems to help me pry it off. if you don't want to do that, you can always just buy the hd itself and get an external enclosure.
