I have an IBM ThinkPad X40 model 2386-8RU that was purchased with 512MB of memory. This is provided by two 256MB modules. I want to upgrade the memory but have been getting conflicting information from IBM. There are IBM 1GB modules available and if I replaced both of the 256MB modules I would have 2GB of RAM. The IBM "tech rep" told me that I could have two 1GM modules installed. However, I have also been told that there is a limit to the amount of RAM that the X40 could support and that it is around 1.2GB. What's the correct answer?

according to the specs on the Lenovo site ( here) it supports 1.28GB, and only has one slot. I would assume this means it has some memory on the motherboard, and you can add up to a 1GB stick to the slot.

Yeah I think the x40 has 256MB soldered to the board and one other slot which in your case is presently filled with a 256MB stick. Do not buy the memory from Lenovo unless you like paying a lot more.
