Hello I have 2 questions concerning upgrading my Inspiron 1720's 2GB memory to 4GB..

    1. My processor has an FSB of 800MHz, does this mean i can buy 4GB DDR2 @ 800MHz? It's weird though cause the default memory runs on 667MHz.. Is 800MHz supported by the inspiron 1720

    2. Im planning to stick with vista x86, so my 4GB won't be fully used, only about 3.2GB right? Well my 8600M GT has been known to get 767MB of memory of the installed RAM..

Will my graphic card use the remaining (unused) 0.8GB for that? Or will it use the 3.2GB...? Cause if it uses the 3.2GB, there's only about 2.5GB of memory left..

    Thanks in advance,

    bartos

    1) Yes, you can buy PC6400 RAM. All RAM will run at maximum 667MHz, and 800MHz isn't currently supported.

    2) Doesn't memory allocation for the GPU depend on the intensity of the app being used? Anyway, I wouldn't be too concerned. I only have 3GB and even when shared the laptop still runs fast enough for me. To answer the question, I would highly doubt that your GPU would be taking up .8GB+ more of your system RAM for usage.

That is correct it will not use the remaining .8GB because the 32OS has run out of memory addresses.

So in short: stick with 667MHz ram, and you will have like 2.6gbs left after the gpu takes its share.
