    Hi,
I'm interested in upgrading the HDD on my Inspiron 700m, which currently has a WDC WD400VE-75HDT0 (40GB). I'm looking into the Samsung HM160HC. Would this be possible?
    Thx in advance

If you want more than 160GB, any of these drives will work.

    sxusteven, please download hdtune
In the info tab you will find a box labeled "48-bit addressing"
If the box is checked off, your system supports harddrives over 137GB
If the box is not checked off, your system has an LBA restriction, so the largest drive you can get is 137GB.
If you get the HM160HC, and your system has an LBA restriction, you can always partition the drive into a 130gb and a 30gb partition.

If you want more than 160GB, there are only two drives worth looking at
    The WD2500BEVE and the WD3200BEVE
The WD2500BEVE is indeed slower than the HM160HC and the WD3200BEVE. That is because the 250gb model is based on 125gb platters, while the HM160HC and the WD3200BEVE are based on higher density 160gb platters

It's fine for the 700m. My last computer was a 700m, put a HM160HC and was able to format a single 149GB (~160000000000 bytes) partition during Windows Vista setup.
