    Hello,

This laptop came with ONE 8GB stick - Hynix 8GB PC3L - 12800S. Lenovo manual states that max RAM is 8GB. There is only ONE ram slot

However, considering that this laptop came out last year, has 6th Gen Intel i5 processor, I think it can handle 16GB.

What is the best way to figure out if laptop can handle 16GB? Which is a return friendly place that I can buy from and if the ram does not work, return with minimal return charges?

    Thanks,

8GB is what's supported. Want something which handles 16GB RAM reliably, you replace the laptop.

Unfortunately, not my laptop and hence not up to me to decide to replace. Considering that this was bought less than 12 months back, user does not want to replace.

Supported RAM mentioned in manual in many cases is different than what the hardware can support.

So, I guess if there are recommendations on where to buy RAM and where one can return with minimal charges is the path that I'd like to follow.

    Thanks for your comments.

Kent_T is right, get a new platform configured as required, now.

Doesn't matter what the user wants or how new the system is, DDR3 @ 16GB is not something that is supported by all M/B's, even if the processor nominally does.

If you want to attempt this, call up everyone you can purchase said RAM modules and ask about their return policy. Doesn't seem like a question to ask on a forum when we don't know where you are... or where you can buy from...

If its DDR3, 16GB will most likely not work.. If it was DDR4, the chance that it would work would have been greater..

That is interesting. Could you please let me know why is that?

I was looking at amazon reviews for 16GB stick and some people who've purchased Lenovo laptops recently and are in the same boat as I am (though different models) have had success with 16GB stick. I want to avoid the hassle of online returns but none of stores locally - Staples, OfficeDepot, BestBuy etc carry the 16GB stick.

I'll try Micro Center and see if they carry.

    Thanks,

@nkaufman it will work. However, it's pricey compared to DDR4.

As far as I'm aware, very few if any desktop motherboards in the Haswell series supported this and on mobile Haswell platform, no notebooks supported 16GB DDR3 sticks... Do you have any proof that this works?
