I have a laptop that supports dual-channel and currently it has this ram in one slot.
Transcend JM1333KSN-4G JetRam Laptop Memory Module - 4GB, PC3-10600, DD3-1333MHz, CL9, SO-DIMM at TigerDirect.com
CPU-Z reports it as Transcend DDR3 PC3-10700
Now I can buy this Kingston DDR3 PC3-10600
Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G ValueRAM Laptop Memory Module - 4GB, PC3-10600, DDR3-1333MHz, 204-pin SODIMM, CL9, 1.5V, Non-ECC, Unbuffered at TigerDirect.com
Are these modules compatible? and will they work in dual channel given that they have the same frequency and capacity?
-
There should be no problem. If they work, they will work in dual channel. And it working it nearly guaranteed. When ram is mixed and matched, the settings always default to the least common denominator to try to insure compatibility.
-
so I should just pull the trigger on this? I don't want to buy a part only to have it cause instability :/ though either way, the Transcend ram is pretty hard to find in local stores and the mail service is crap here.
-
If it was me making the purchase, I wouldn't have any fears about it. People mix and match different RAM sticks all the time and I have only heard of a few instances of incompatibilities.
-
Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules so I would buy two of the Kingston.
-
The performance difference is negligible in any real life situation since they'll still both be the same capacity, speed, and timings.
-
Buy the cheapest. As a rule mixed makes no real difference.
