I was looking around online but found no real help. There are two dimms in this machine. It came with 4 gigs already installed. It's some brand called Elipsa or something obscure so I was wondering if I should get two sticks of 4 gig RAM from a known brand. How can I find out which brands are compatible? And how about the RAM speed? Thanks for any tips.
Was also thinking of replacing the 320 GB 5400 HDD with a 7200 or even an SSD.

I just need to know if any laptop RAM should technically work. Thanks.

The model number you give for your notebook is not specific enough to answer you.
Either tell us the complete model number or you can download CPUz to tell you what RAM modules you have installed.
