I have never cracked open the back of a laptop, but am looking into buying a Sager 9750 and got some advice on the notebook buying board that I should consider buying minimal RAM from somewhere like pctorque and then upgrading myself. I googled upgrading RAM and saw a few links and then went to some of the manufacturers sites to see if I could find specific RAM matching Sager 9750 but in some cases didn't see Sager mentioned. I was hoping to find the following RAM might work
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145575
but couldn't confirm it using mfr websites.
I am a complete noob so any pointers / advice would be much aprpeciated. Thanks.

That wont work. 184pin memories are used only in desktops. For laptops you'll need a 200pin DDR SODIMM.
You'll need something like this...
