I just joined NR, this is my 1st post...

I plan on purchasing my first notebook very soon. I'm thinking about the HP zv6000.

I believe it will be cheaper to upgrade RAM myself by purchasing a 1 Gig stick and installing it in the secondary slot. How difficult is it to replace the primary memory stick? Should I order the machine with 1 x 256 MB and upgrade both myself for a total of 2 Gig OR order it with 1 x 512 MB and upgrade only the seconday slot for a total of 1.5 Gig (the only way to get 1 Gig in the primary slot when you order it is to get 2 Gigs total which is a bit expensive)?

    Thanks!

i can't really help you about the changeing of the ram thing but i just order the zv6000 from office depot and i upgraded from 1x256 to 1x512 and it cost me $75 bucks so 1x256 is around $100.

if you gonna buy i would suggest get it form office depot with all the rebates.

i save $430 and my total came out to $641.00

Yeah, I will be ordering from OD tomorrow.

From what I've found on the forum here it sounds like accessing the 2nd memory stick is a bit more complicated (take it apart, underneath keyboard) but doable. However I think 1.5 GB RAM should be plenty for me so I will order my machine with 1 x 512 and add the second 1GB myself.

Most of the time, 2gb will be overkill and will return diminishing performance.

I'd say stick with 1x 512 and 1x 1024 stick, and upgrade if ever needed as well
