I just bought a Sony Vaio FS630. The specs can be found at the following website.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=329363&pfp=BROWSE
It comes with 2 256MB sticks of ram in it. Can I upgrade the ram myself? I have done it in desktops before, but I hear notebooks can be more complicated.
The next question, can I put 2 sticks of 1GB ram in it. What kind do I need, and where can I get it at a good price?
My last question is, where can I find a resource on how to replace the ram so that I can better avoid causing any damage to my notebook.
Thank you all sooooo much for your help!

There are a few things here. It has a 4200 RPM hard drive which is going to be the biggest slowdown I think in your comp. I would look to upgrade that too.
The RAM you need is going to be PC-2700 DDR 200-pin So-DIMM found here:

I can't seem to find what kind of hard drive it takes. But at least this will help out for the question you asked. -
Thank you, I appreciate that. I would definitely be interested in getting a faster harddrive. I'll make a seperate post about that later though I suppose. If anybody has any information on replacing the harddrive or any other advice re: replacing Ram, please let me know!
Does the brand of Ram I pick matter? Also, is there a site that walks you through how to upgrade it safely? Thanks, -
Most of the time replacing the RAM is a pretty simple process. Something like flipping your laptop upside down, unscrewing a cover, taking the RAM out, then putting new RAM in. I would suggest maybe reading your owners manual because my Dell's owners manual had instructions.

I went to a store today and was told that I cannot get 2 gigs of ram in this notebook. Can anybody let me know if this is true?? Thanks!

I have a new 120GB 5400 HD setting on my bookshelf waiting to be installed in my FS630W. I will attempt it in the next week or so.
As for the RAM, this notebook only supports 1GB max memory, so (2) 512MB PC2700 is what you need to get. Sony's site has decent instructions on how to access the memory modules. Basically, there is a screw on the back that you need to remove which holds the keyboard. The memory bank are under there. The screw is marked with an arrow. I haven't tried this yet, waiting for some free time, so don't take my word for it.
