    Hi Guys

    I'm a complete noob, to this after-market laptop stuff! I currently own an
    M1710 at the following spec;

    T7400 C2D
    2GB 667Mhz RAM
    100GB 7200rpm
    7900GS
    wireless b/g card.

    After doin a bit of googling, I know I can upgrade to the 7950 GTX. Dell are absolutely useless though over here in the UK. I think the most I've got out of them about this card is that it's expensive as a spares part? (freggin useless).

    I want to do the following upgrades but want to know if i'm jus burning a hole in my pocket;

    CPU to 7600G (for OC ability)
    3GB/4GB 800mhz? (not sure if thats actually possible - if not, just 3GB 667)
    hard drive...not sure if thats upgradeable at all
    7900 GTX or 7950 GTX (both I'm having alot of difficulty getting over here in the UK)
    Wireless N card.

    The wireless and graphics I do have my heart set on, but want to know if its worth the money, as i haven't got seen the upgrades in action. If i'm barking up the wrong tree (i'm a dog on weekends) or in the wrong section of the forum, please do not hesitate, to bark back at me :D

    Thx

    H

    The RAM is cheap and easy. The wireless I think you can do also, do you need "n"?
    If you are going to upgrade CPU and GPU and overclock heat could be an issue. Getting your hands on 7950GTX that fits a DeLL is going to be hard to find I think and expensive. Also a regular T7600 is about $400.
    If you ask me you have a good notebook now, you might do better selling it and buying new even get the 8800m GTX might be cheaper definitely less headache.

    yeah, we've just upgraded at home, wireless-n would be nice without the gay dongles.

    I agree with the heat, as its already nice and close to toasty. I think i'll leave the cpu. Can't really afford another laptop. In the UK, its 1000 GBP for my spec lappy goin at 2USD to the GBP, thats 2000USD and its not really laying about.

    However, i'm interested. Which laptops have got the only G80 worth mentioning then?

    I'll compare it to the cost, of maybe just doin the GPU, wireless and ram, and make an educated puuuurchase!

    Would you know what speed i'm restricted to on the ram? I know dells have a lovely habit of using the 667mhz ram, but i'm not sure if 800mhz is supported by the cpu. And is the gpu hard to find out there too! I've spotted the 7900 GTX, but not sure if its worth the hard earned cash.

    It is Intel chips that limit all the mobile to 667Mhz RAM not DeLL. Have you spotted the 7900GTX with the DeLL proprietary plug? Because those are the only ones that will work? And yes all Dell upgrade cards can be hard to obtain as DeLL proprietary and DeLL not in the upgrade after purchase game.

    When you say G80? what is that referring to?

    Thats what I thought. I read a bs review then, where someone put 800mhz as an upgrade...hence the question.

    What is the dell proprietary plug. All I've found so far, is a 7900 GTX for the M1710.

    Is there a shop I could call or something that may provide me with the likes of these cards?

    How much difference is there in the benchmark tween the 79, and 7950.

    As for the G80 comment, that was me being a bs artist lol. I assumed that would be the "code and secret handshake" for the Gefore 8 series. hehehe

    Now i'm peeved. I finally found the right part numbers;

    Go 7950 GTX - YF227
    Go 7900 GTX - YF209

    Dell UK cannot get hold of either. Whats the stock like for these in the US?
