I am looking at the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2. Is there any way to foretell whether I can upgrade to this? I have an ASUS M70vr/Vm series. Thanks for any help. (@)(@)

It's not possible. The main reason being GPU units have different sizes and are usually specific to one particular brand/model of notebook.

the m70 comes with a 9600m gs, which is MXM II. you could (probably) upgrade, but the highest you will get is a 9650m gt.. which isn't for sale by itself right now

Actually, even though the M70 has a MXM II socket, it can't just take any MXM II GPU. Each manufacture has slightly different specs for their own notebooks, so unless Asus comes out with an M70 with the 9650M GT or 3870, it's almost impossible for you to just snag one of those and pop into your M70.

the 3870x2 from ATI is a very powerful card, there really is no need to upgrade it. It can easily take on and beat the 9800gtx cards from nVidia.
As emporium mentioned, you cant just upgrade to any mxm-2 card you like. Their are size limitations, and different heatsink mounts used, and you need to get one which can fit and mount in your laptop.
If you are interested, check out mxm-upgrade its run by a member "ice-tea" here. It is a very informative site about upgrading graphics cards
