I was recently given a Westinghouse laptop for free, it works alright but I want to upgrade it a bit, I plan on putting in 2 gigs of memory and wanted to also upgrade the processor. It has the ATI RC410MD board, I was wondering what I could do as far as processors was concerned. I know it would have to be a socket M I was just wondering if there was anything preventing me from going with something like an Intel 760-780, thanks in advance.

Yea I had seen that thread, thats what got me to register here and start my own topic, it seems like a dead end, basically don't upgrade to the 1.73 celeron because it's not much of an improvement, it doesn't know how to run on less than full speed. I'm not that computer savvy and I know that some laptops have the BIOS set where it limits how fast of a processor you can run, I just want to know if I throw down the coin for a 760-780 will it be able to work. For something that was available at wal-mart I figured there would be a lot more info out there about these things but I guess most people opted for the brand names they could trust.

I see, yes celeron M is not a good upgrade since they dont have the speedstep technology. Whats the best chip your model came out with?

Download CPU-z and see what chipset you have and see this Intel cpu compatibility guide (Socket M). Most BIOS's will support the cpus for the designated chipset.

Always make sure it is the latest version you have installed before upgrading the CPU.

Westinghouse laptops arent really that popular. They make good washing machines and fridges though.

Alright well here are the results from CPU-Z

    Processor

    Intel Celeron M 410
    Yonah
    Socket 479 mPGA
    Rated FSB 533.4

    The Chipset is

    ATI RS/400RC/400RC/410

    Bios is Phoenix Technologies LTD
    Version 4.06

Does that mean that other Yonah processors will be compatiable A celeron M 450 would be going from a 1.46 to a 2.0 or could I go to a Core Duo T2450 at 2.0 which would be a better processor?
