I want an Acer 3820TG but I want it with its high specs: I7-620M/HD5650, etc. The 3820TG has not yet been released in the US and is available in its I7 form only in Singapore. I have no way of getting one of those units so I am considering buying an I5-430M/5650 from Germany and swapping in an I7-620M (or an I5-540M). I am temporarly using my travel computer for everyday use, but I am running out of time to select a replacement for my old Dell Vostro. I have to have a good multimedia computer by the end of June to meet my work obligations in July. I don't think I will be able to wait for Acer to get the I7 model to the US, which could still take months.

    I have 4 quesions.

    1. Does anybody know definitively that the I5-430M in the 3820TG can be physically removed and a new CPU swapped in? Is there any chance that the CPU would be permanently soldered in some why to prevent the upgrade? If so, where should I look for confirmation?

    2. The Acer comes with an I7-620M model so there should be no problem getting the Bios to recognize it. But, I don't think Acer is offereing an I5-540M, only an I5-520M. If I put in an I5-540M (maybe my first choice) will the bios necessarily recognize that? Or could there be a problem? Is the I7 the safer alternative.

    3. If I wanted to use the most effective heat conducting thermal paste in the swap, any recommendations?

    4. I have seen the I7-620M on sale on EBAY for $275. Any recommendations on a better source? Do you think there will be a market for the I5-430M that I take out of the 3820TG? Should I try to sell it? What to you think it's worth?

Thanks for your comments. I can't belive that I am considering major surgery on a brand new laptop but I have settled on this particular model Acer and want these particular components in my machine. I will listen to anyone who has any ideas on how to buy the 3820TG with the I7-620M for a reasonable price. Are there resellers in Singapore that anybody knows about who can broker such a purchase? I am prepared to swap keyboards if need be. I estimate that I can buy the 3820TG and the I7-620M for $1,275 including ~$100 shipping from Germany (only an estimate at this point). I would consider any reasonable option that keeps me from putting a brand new computer under the knife. I don't really think there's any option, however, and an prepared to "suit-up" and take a stab at it.
