I have a gateway mx6441 notebook its a few years old and i absoloutly LOVE it I think im emmotionaly attached lol it lol but neways im looking at upgrading here are the current specs

    1.8ghz amd 64 turion ml-34
    512mb pc 2700 ram (max 2gb)
    hdd 4200 rpm 80gb
    mini pci express wireless card

Ok here is my plan i want to upgrade the cpu with an amd turion 2.2ghz ml-40 i found a similar model on gateways website that runs the same bios as my cpu so in theory it shouldnt be a problem right?

I already ordered the ram from new egg crucial pc3200 2 1gb sticks which is max for this board

im thinking of replacing the hdd with an ssd drive around 100gb so that should help but i dont know what converter i would need the current drive is ide

and i want to remove the wireless card and instal the intel turbo memory mini pci express module it works with windows ready boost read write speed is like 40mbs i think not too sure

and since i removed the wireless card i was going to take apart a wireless n usb card and solder it to one of my usb's internally

so what do you guys think of this plan any recoomendations would be appreciated

and as a side note im running windows 7 beta build 7000 and it runs great on my current setup and has about the same resource footprint as xp just thought i would throw that in there and its uber stable to be this early in development

I didnt think about the space issue with the hdd Do they make 7200rpm ide drives? have you ever used the intel turbo memory pci mini cards before ? i have never messed with them and i have read mixed reviews about them

They do make 2.5" 7200RPM PATA drives. They are rare and subsequently expensive. There are 2.5" PATA SSDs with reasonable specs. They are also expensive, but only slightly more so than their SATA counterparts.

I do not believe you cannot use a SATA drive with an adapter. Addonics does not make an IDE/SATA adapter that will fit in a notebook (even it did, your drive would have to be sticking out or something). You can use an IDE/CF adapter if you wish to make a CF SSD, but I think your money is better spent on a real one.

I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) Intel Turbo Memory needs to be supported at a chipset level and your chipset will certainly not support it. Nonetheless, with 2GB of memory, the benefits of Turbo Memory will be negligible. Keep your wireless card or upgrade to a better one.

I am a bit rusty with the amd turion line. Your system will have no problem reading the ML-40, but I think the ML-44 is the fastest single core turion for your system. I dont think your system will recognize the dual core turions.

For the harddrive, pretty much anything is an upgrade from a 4200rpm drive. If you want a SSD, I advise looking into the M-TRON Mobi 3000 series. It is a very stable SSD, however it is 32gb.
Their are 64gb PATA SSD's but they are pretty expensive.
If you want a mechanical harddrive, I would suggest getting the Samsung HM160HC. It is the fastest harddrive for the PATA interface. (SSD's arent harddrives, their SSD's)
Here is my review of the HM160HC. From the benchmarks you will see that it is faster than the 7200rpm drives for the PATA interface.

The drive can be bought at zipzoomfly, or lagoom for around $55

I dont think the Intel Turbo Memory is going to work in your system. It was designed a few years later than when your laptop was. The ITM only comes on the mini pcie interface, so if you have one, it may be worth it. But I dont know if your system will be able to see it.
If you want, I suggest getting the Intel 3945 or 4965 series wireless cards for the mini pcie interface. They are really good wireless cards, and they can be had for pretty cheap.

Seconded on the Samsung, 3945, and 4965.

Does Mtron actually offer the MOBI 3000 series in PATA (and not PATA/ZIF)? If they do, I actually want one...

thanks for all the input guys especially about the turbo memory i had no clue it had to be chipset compatible as my wirless card goes im pretty happy with it i can detect my home wireless network from about 250 yards away with decent signal im just trying to figure out how to get the abosoloute most out of this notebook i hate to buy another because i just cant find one that has the "feel" of this one and there is a ml-44 2.4ghz but i dont know if my bios would support it and the price difference is about 100 dollars for 200 mhz more and dual cores are def out of the question its a socket 754 board so no dual core

I wouldnt pay $100 more for .2ghz. It should work though its just a slight increase in clock speed not a major architecture change.

Then i dont see a problem. Well maybe. I tried to use a athlon 2800+ mobile it used like 25 watts in a zv5000. Well apperently it didnt have the correct bios release for it and gave me an error saying " warning cannot support 89 watt cpu's " Granted the athlon 4000+ might actually be a 89watt cpu im not sure. If it came in the laptop from the factory then i dont see why i wouldnt work.

It should work. The 4000+ was the fastest socket 754 processor. Its a desktop processor though, so be careful.
I have a 3700+ in my socket 754 laptop, and it gets a bit warm.
