This is my first time attempting this kind of thing, so I don't want to make a pigs ear of it.

I'm currently using a HP Compaq 6720s using an Intel Celeron 530 @ 1.73ghz, I want to swap it for a T2330 that I've cannibalized from an old Acer Aspire 2920z.

Is this possible or advisable, or am I mad for even attempting it? :D

    Excellent.

I assume that I'll need to download the BIOS from the Acer site as the chip came from an Acer laptop?

    Got it.

Updated the HP Bios last week (If you can call a 2008 upgrade an "update").

Technically, you shouldn't even need to update the BIOS (the Pentium T2XXX have been out since the 6720s launched, anyway), but it's better to do it just in case.

If it doesn't work, well that sucks, but I believe it will, and compared to that single core Celeron (which is frankly pathetic, had one myself :), the Pentium is quite a lot faster. Just be careful not to break any parts when disassembling/assembling.

The 6720s uses two motherboards; one for Celeron and the other one for Pentium dual core and Core 2 Duo.

I tried to upgrade my friend's laptop from Celeron M 530 to a C2D T7300 in the past and it didn't work. Basically we had had to boot twice into Windows to get the laptop to work properly. There are many in the forum who have tried the same upgrade and one has succeeded. It seems that for the upgrade to work the RAM has to operate at 533MHz. So basically you have to have at least one RAM module as DDR2 PC4200.

You don't have to use a T7300. Any socket P CPU operating at 533, 667, or 800MHz will do :)

I believe either board should work with the Pentium, though - the T7300 has a 800 MHz FSB speed, while the Pentium T23xx is 533 MHz FSB...

Wouldn't put it past HP to use different microcodes for different boards (they're well known for this c**p :)...
