I'm going from the 860m GS60 to the 970m GS60 Ghost.
Is this as simple as physically swapping the msata SSD as well as the HDD's between the laptops or will I run into driver/compatibility issues? The only difference between the machines is the GPU. Everything else identical.

Re-install whenever you can.
Even if the specs appear to be the same, the hardware IDs are always different. And there are plenty of stuff beyond the spec list.Charles P. Jefferies and tilleroftheearth like this. -
Mr. Koala is correct. Reinstall is always the best route whenever swapping hardware. First, you make sure that you get a clean, stable installation of Windows. Second (and this is the really nerdy reason), a Windows install is one of the most intensive processes you can put your new hardware through. And I, for one, actualyl enjoy re-installing Windows on new hardware, just to see how much faster it installs compared to my old hardware
Having said all of that... yes, if you just swap the mSATA and mecahnical HDD into the new laptop, it should work fine. Windows is pretty good at detecting new hardware, and making the necessary changes to get up-and-running (especially when you're moving from Intel-to-Intel chipsets). You will probably want to manually re-install all the drivers (especially motherboard chipset drivers) just to be safe. But overall, you should be fine just moving your mSATA drive over.alexhawker and Charles P. Jefferies like this. -
Good luck moving your mSATA drive. Unless you've done it before, accessing that thing can be a major pain in the butt in the GS60. If you do go for it, be sure to repaste your CPU/GPU at that time as well. But I'd advise to just do a clean install.
