I have a Dell 600m laptop is that is a bit older and wanted to upgrade the memory. It currently shows to have 512 mb of DDR 333 (PC2700) RAM in a 2 x 256 mb configuration. Can I remove one of the 256 mb modules and add a 1 Gb module so that the total memory will be 1.25 Gb, or do both of the modules need to match in terms of size?

Well, the inspiron 600M's spec sheet shows that it can support a max of 2GB PC-2700 ram....1GB in each slot
    So installing 1GB + 256MB won't be a problem....
In other words, you can mix different densities of modules in your computer....
You may look at the various memory options by running a scan at Crucial.. :)

    I have a Dell 600m notebook that currently has DDR 333 (PC2700). Can I replace it with DDR 533 (PC2 4200)?

The fastest ram that the Dell 600m supports is pc2700.

No, you can't. The computer would only be able to downclock RAM running at one speed faster (PC3200 in your case).

See the table in this Wikipedia article for more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM

Do you mean DDR2-533? I don't think DDR goes up to 533. DDR2 is not compatible with DDR period.

That picture you see there is just a Dell D series enhanced docking station hooked up to an XPS system that also can use that dock. I have that dock as well, it is awesome - see my sig. HOWEVER, it actually does impede airflow out of the laptop chasses to at least some extent, since the hot air blows out the back of the lappy which makes sense, but the docking station plastic is pretty close there. Not a great design - but for functionality you CANT beat the Dell enhanced port extender. Not only does it replicate ports like any old port replicator, but adds space for another hard drive via D-bay, a place to charge you extre notebook battery, D-bay connectors to hook up other D-bay devices, 4 usb ports, DVI, VGA, SPDIF Gigabit ethernet, a full length half height PCI card slot for anything from adding a pro sound card to your laptop, or even another video card to run 4 monitors which is what I do (see my sig).

    Cheers!
