I'm planning to buy a Dell Inspiron 6400 very soon and I want to have 2 GB of Ram but its 330$ to get 2GB instead of 512 MB... its quite expensive. So I was wondering if it was possible and if it would be cheaper to just take 1 GB DIMM memory with the laptop and then buy myself another 1 GB at some computer store. I dont know much about memory compatibility with laptops, anyone can help me out? Thx.

Yes, it should be pretty easy. Get the correct type of RAM and the installation in the 6400 should be a breeze. Dell lists the service manuals on their website, check it out if you need more detailed instructions.

In your case, a 200pin DDR2 533 or 667MHz SODIMM should be compatible. Also most memory manufacturers have online memory configurators, check them out for compatibility as well.

If your laptop model only support 553Mhz, it will backward compatible to 533Mhz even you put a 667Mhz one. Compatibility is very important as long as all of them have no error.
