I have just ordered one of these and wonder

what is an efficient mlc ssd to upgrade to?

    and also

should I purchase a 120GB SSD or one of the smaller ones and just use an external HD?

    Intel X25-M (or Kingston equivalent)
    OCZ Vertex
    Supertalent ME
Corsair (120GB uses older samsung controller but still pretty good. 256GB is very good but expensive).

It depends on what you want to use your HDD for, if you are lots of media files then having a 120GB SSD is not a bad choice..

The most important question is what is your budget.

Indeed - the X25-M is arguably the fastest consumer-grade SSD out there, but it's bloody expensive. The OCZ Vertex runs a decent 2nd place with the Super Talent ME right behind it (OCZ gets a boost thanks to their new 1.1 firmware).
And don't forget the 64GB Samsung SLC SSDs.

right now my budget for an ssd will be around 300

I'm thinking of the 120gb ocz vertex though
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227395

seems as though the reviews are good

and for the capacity, i'm debating on whether to just get a small one and use an external hard drive

I only use about 200gb from my comp right now including music/movies/games/pics etc.

That's what I'm gonna end up doing if I get an 80GB X25-M or 120GB Vertex. I own a 1TB Seagate external, so I'm just going to offload the better part of the 266GB I'm using to that thing (mostly videos).

TehSuigi, if your budget allows, go for the Samsung 256GB MLC. I think its actually better than both of those drives. It has less issues than either drive and has been around the longest. While it is below the Intel in random writes, it's higher than the Intel with bigger blocks. Plus we have to see if Intel's degradation issue has been fixed. Still need to see about OCZ/Indilinx since it's still fairly new.

SSD is simple, just buy and install like a regular HDD.

    thanks sgogeta

and I wish I had that money to spend or i'd get that samsung haha
vertex 120 is already a bit above the budget but seems worth it

You bumped a month old thread to ask about the failure of tech support to answer questions about products?

Hint, Tech support can't tell you anything thats not in their book without the risk of inaccuracy. If its about modifications its not in the book. If its in regards to something proprietary they cant answer that either.

That is the most stupidest, NOOB question a tech support can give you. That answer is WRONG is ALL WAYS!

I have an intel SSD on my HDX 16 with no problem except that I cant perform an HDDerase (Not that I need to).

Look at the G. Skill Falcon, its identical to the Vertex but often sold cheaper, though in the deals section I have a thread for the 120gb Vertex for about $307 AR and the rebate is only good for this month.

Sorry for raising this thread from the grave but I've been searching the internet for a straight answer for the past couple of days now, and haven't been able to get a straight answer. Thank God for websites like this where there are actual knowledgeable people.

I planned on upgrading the 7200RPM hdd to ssd once the price comes down. I hope it's as simple as just unscrewing the bottom and popping it in and out, other than that I have no idea what I'm doing because I'm a total laptop nub. Hopefully it's on youtube or something....

Its pretty simple in most machines, but how to get to your HDD differs on each notebook. So without knowing what notebook you use nobody can offer advice.

Na its illidex same as the vertex, also same 64mb cache and same memory. Just different brand/firmware but the firmware is supposed to be on par or better than the OCZ

oh, yes. have messed that up. i don't care myself that much about those "cheap brands" :) and, espencially ocz doesn't make it easy to know with that much products launched, each different. g.skill is similar.
