The notebook is over 3 years old, for the last 2 years its been into my sisters unforgiving hands. I recently got it back since i gave her one of my dv2000's. Suprisingly, everything is fully functional. The screen brightness is as good as brand new, the battery still lasts over 1:20mins on full brightness and wireless. Impressed at the machines sturdyness. Horrible Specs as follows:

    -Intel Celeron M 360 1.4ghz (OC'd to 1.6ghz) Dothan
    -855GM/GME chipset
    -256mb DDR333 ram
    -40gb IDE HD
    -Intel Wireless b/g
    -JBL Pro speakers
    -TI firewire/MMC reader

Ive recently clean installed XP PRO and put AS5 thermal paste. Cant complain about the performance.

But now im having abit of heating issues. The BIOS has set the fan to only kick in at 65c. The problem is i never reach that temperature unless i completely stress the CPU out. Now since the fan doesnt kick in at all, the heatsink just get warm and the whole chassis goes warm which can get quite annoying. I only use this notebook when im in bed and only for surfing. Ive tried Speedfan and even I8kfangui to force the fans with no luck. Anyone have other ideas?

The processor cannot be undervolted, which is forcing me to upgrade to a Pentium M processor which possibly can. For $21AUD i can buy the Pentium M 710 (1.4ghz version of my celeron processor). Im also currently bidding on a better Pentium M 1.6ghz for $25. From my quick searching, apparently Pentium M's can be undervolted and Celerons cant. Any straight info about this?

Im also currently bidding on 512mb sticks of RAM. If anyone wants to sell me cheap ones, PM me.

I would focus on getting about 2 x 512 mb memory cards for your laptop, and a 2.0Ghz Pemtium M 750. It is a really good processor and you can probably get it for like $40, but I am not sure about pricing in australia, its probably higher though.
If you cant get a faster pemntium M than a 1.6, I suggest pin modding to bring it up to 2.0Ghz or so. It will definitely help keep the laptop chugging along.
For harddrive, I would upgrade to a samsung HM160HC since it is the fastest ata/pata/ide harddrive on the market.

I would downgrade your bios to an older version, and see if the fan kicks in for you. If it does not, try updating to the newest bios, or reinstall the bios you currently have.

I am pretty sure pentium M's can be undervolted.

    Good luck

I only have $50-60 to spend to upgrade this notebook. I only use it for surfing, chatting, movies and music while in bed. So RAM and processor will be the first 2 upgrades. The performance now is adequate but it could be alot faster.

As for the BIOS, the older version actually had a higher temperature policy. Since its plugged in to the AC 95% of the time, i dont mind making the fans run at 25% just to dissipate the built up heat. Only if there was a way....

I might be buying the RAM you PM'd me about and hoping to negotiating down the processor. Thanks for the notice
