I am about to buy a netbook, probably the ASUS EEE 1005PE. Is there any sense in upgrading from 1 to 2GB RAM? It is very cheap to buy and easy to fit yourself but would it improve performance noticeably? Would it help flow when watching streamed news, for example, or YouTube clips?
Your comments appreciated and my apologies if this has already been covered. Greetings from Denmark.

I've actually done this myself, I picked up the ram pretty cheap so it was very worth it.

Did this on may daughter's ASUS eee netbook - helps a lot. Many of the articles read on netbooks it is the first recommendation - upgrade the ram. Was well -worth the upgrade cost seeing the before and after results.

on just about any machine, especially one that is cpu-limited, upgrading ram to the max possible is the best and possibly the least expensive performance upgrade you can do.
The challenge with netbooks however, is that you do need to make sure that you're not spending more $$$ than you would have spent getting a 'real' laptop with a 10" or 12" screen. Even 17" laptops with a real c2d processor and 4Gb ram can be had for under $600-
Considering the real-world price overlaps, about the only thing that 'netbooks' bring to the table vs laptops is a notion (not always true though) of extended battery life. -
Adding more ram might as might not improve the performance of your netbook. It all depends on your OS and your usage.
1GB is quite a lot for WinXP but not enough for Win Vista.
If you have only few applications running at the same time 1GB is enough. If you have a lot of them running at the same time then 2GB would make a considerable improvement.
Any way with the price of DDRam 2 I would say go for the upgrade. The ram is very cheap in ebay if you have access to it. -
The very cheap term is an overused terminology. Ram isn't "cheap," but it is a relatively inexpensive way to increase the performance of virtually any computer.

Many thanks everybody - much appreciated!
