Hmmm interesting topic. I have the stock 1920x1080 screen that comes with the G73JH-A2. Has pretty good colors and great backlight the way I have it set right now its a bit on the dark side though when playing games that are dark.

I was thinking of getting the new G73SW just for that awesome 120hz matte screen. I passed in the end due to budget restraints but think its possible to put the nvidia 120hz screen of the SW on a AMD 5870 version of the JH?

I really would like a matte screen, I am so tired of glossy.

If it's the same panel as the JW the model number is LGD02C5

I am not sure if it uses the same connector on the LVDS cable, but otherwise it should work, but there will be no 3D since there is no emitter. Also that screen is impossible to find. :p

Urm...I don't remember perfectly, but I think you want one of the screens that says "right-side-connector".
In my guide I said the original screen had the connector on the left, but that was with the back of the screen facing away from me.

I would prefer not to pull my laptop apart to double-check... :)

Hey guys I'm reviving this thread as I've got a few questions regarding screen replacement. I've searched, read and scanned through what seems like 50 pages of bits of info but I can't seem to find a definitive end all answer.

I've got a Asus G73JH-BST7 (best buy model) with the AOU139E 1600x900 WXGA screen, which appears to be the most unwanted model.

The screen on my G73 is almost dead. The colors are very messed up and blotchy, resolution is crappy and dark and can't use it to really do anything. I'm pretty certain its the screen and not the video card because with a HDMI or VGA output the colors and resolution all work properly.

This threads OP replaced a LG 900 screen with a LG 1080 screen, so my model is different. I've been looking at replacement screens at laptopscreen.com as well as amazon.

Can this exact model of the G73 directly swap to the higher quality LG or Hannstar 1080 screen with no other software/ firmware/ driver changes? Or am I stuck with just another AOU? If I can directly swap it, any links the appropriate screen would help me.

    Thanks for your time.

    -Dan

Definitely sounds like a screen problem to me. If the gpu is going bad it would most likely be manifested as a random crashes and graphical glitches in games.

You can certainly switch to a non-AOU screen. The only limiting factor is the connector type for your screen, and if a website like laptopscreen.com is selling any screen as a replacement for the G73 it should work fine (the exception being that a 120hz screen probably won't work since the bandwidth requirements most likely necessitate a different connector).
That being said, your best bet is to buy a screen that someone else has already used to upgrade their G73 - that way you know it is the right connector.
If you have the same model, but a newer version that should work too (e.g. LP173WF1 (TL)(C1) and LP173WF1 (TL)(D1) shouldn't be different except in screen quality).
All of the screens on this page: https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/G73JH-X1/ should work fine - notice that they all have the same connector. (The only one there worth buying however is Item ID: 861127.)

You won't need to make any software or firmware changes at all. You don't even need to reinstall the graphics driver.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any issues. The only thing you might have a slight difficulty with is cable routing if the screen connector is on the opposite side from your current screen.

Just got the screen and installed it. Went very smooth. Connector was on the same side as original and is working in 1080. The screen looks a little "fuzzy" but I think its just the characteristics of the matte screen, and other than 1 dead pixel that's messing with my OCD its pretty nice.
    Thanks again for the help.

No problem. I too have a slight "fuzziness" on my matte 1080p screen. Congrats!
