Hey, I got a Dell 6400, it ships with Vista Home Premoum as standard, and I only got 1gig of RAM cause, well it was an extra £122 for 2gig, which I thought was a bit expensive.
What I'd like to know is, if I were to buy my own DDR2 RAM and plugged it in, 1. Would it work? lol and 2. Would it make the Dell warrantly invalid?
-
1. Yes, it should work. Upgrading RAM is a straightforward process.
2. No, it will not void your warranty. -
Okay, are Dells relatively simple to take the casing off to get to the ram slot?
Some manufacturers don't like people opening things themself. -
Read this from the Dell Website.
Go to this page to find the manual for your laptop. It'll have instructions on how to upgrade the RAM.
It's a pretty easy process.
For example here's how to get to the memory on a Dell E1505. Very simple. -
Yes, you can put your RAM in the spare, empty DIMM slot. However, you need to check carefully what type of RAM your laptop uses, as RAM modules are very specific.
You need to buy 200 pin Notebook RAM...

That RAM is clocked at 667Mhz. However, the 6400 is customisable with either 553Mhz or 667Mhz RAM. If mix two different frequencies, both the modules will run at the lowest frequency of the two. So if you have 553Mhz RAM, and you buy and install the 667mhz RAM in that link, the RAM will downclock to 553Mhz and you'll be wasting money as you may as well buy 553Mhz RAM.
Download CPU-Z if you're unsure about your RAM frequency.

Click on memory Tab I think, and the frequency will be in the Timings Or Frequency Box. -
Okay thanks, sounds good
