Hey people !
As I am a solid After Effects user, I am aware that for a good workflow you need a fast processor, very fast hard drives and a lot of ram. I am looking at multiple laptops so I can buy one for school and most of them maxes out to 16Gb of ram. I know that's already a lot but in many tutorials, they say that for best performances you need to set 2Gb of ram per cpu cores. Obviously every quad core processors can use 8 cores, so 8 cores X 2 Gb of ram = 16 Gb. This pretty borderline, nothing is left of other apps, so I might consider having 32Gb of ram.
I'm currently looking at a MSI GS70 and the problem is, the max I can have when buying is 16Gb of ram ( 2 sticks I suppose ). Is it possible to upgrade this to the 32Gb of ram I want ( 2 x 16Gb sticks ) or the motherboard wont support it ?

There are no 16GB sticks out there yet. Best bet is to find a laptop with 4 SODIMM slots and supports 4x8GB.............

If you're already considering 17" notebook's, simply choose one with 4 SoDIMM slots that will allow you to have 32GB on board.
Also; with MSI, make sure the system you're buying is not performance limited with the dumb tricks they use to give a smaller/cheaper power adaptor and then having the system rely on battery power for the rest of the juice it needs to run flat out.
Worse: when the battery is at 30% or less - the performance of the system drops considerably...
Yeah, talking about MSI 'NOS' here.

When 16GB sticks become available, it should work in the laptop as an upgrade since the memory controller is built into the cpu and has a fairly high limit for how much ram it supports.

i also think it's 2GB per core not thread, 32GB seems like an absurd amount of ram.

I have 32GB RAM on my Clevo 15" notebook. It cost all of $200. Only $100 for 16GB kit. Does require four RAM slots though.

I would however ask your school if that much is really needed, I would never have needed that much as an undergrad student an its unlikely (but possible) that for your studies you will need that much RAM. That doesn't prevent you from buying a notebook with 4 SODIMM slots so that you can upgrade in the future should you need to. -
I was just looking at what professionals using adobe after effects on laptops with 16GB of RAM are saying. I wouldn't worry about trying to find a laptop with 4 slots for RAM....
