I was just reading that the release date for Merom will be August 22 but I need my laptop by early August, no way around that but I want the Merom proc as well. If I were to buy cheap proc now would there be a way to upgrade later on to get a Merom proc?

I was going to buy a T60 or W3J (leaning towards T60). So it would be a core duo to core 2 duo and I know that for Conroe current mobos don’t have compatibility issues. Is it the same for laptops? Do I have to go with one laptop over the other to be able to do this upgrade? Thanks for the help.

Merom will be pin compatible with the current Napa platform, but getting a BIOS for the notebook that will support the new processor might be another issue altogether. I highly doubt that notebook manufacturers will be willing to release a BIOS that allows you to upgrade to the next gen processor (although there have been ingenious BIOS hackers who have performed similar miracles in the past). They are in the business of selling notebooks, after all, and would much rather strongarm you into buying a new Merom notebook rather than handing you the ability to upgrade your old one.

    Just my theory.

As above, but I'm fairly certain someone will hack it if the company isn't willing to do it themselves.

Keep in mind you will have no more warranty after you do this.
