Seeing the thread was closed where I said I saw on a sight where to up grade a graphics card on a dell laptop. Why threads are closed for no good except where there is abusive seems a waste of time to me. A bit more tolerance would be good. It would of been good to post this on my original thread.

The dell laptop is a 1705 and not a 1720 as I said but I wounder if somebody could tell what type of card is in the picture. Is it a MXM or something else.

    Here is the link.

Its a Dell-proprietary version of MXM, so general parts will not work.

However on a 1705 you can use the cards for the XPS 1710 so the 7900GTX and 7950GTX. But dell laptops can only accept dell cards and only certain cards as well. Don't try putting that 7950 in a 1505, it won't be pretty.

Right I see, thats why I must of thought when I originally saw the article I thought it was a MXM card. Looking on the dell site any sells upgrades like memory seem very expensive. I am seriously considering going for the acert gemblue instead. The retailer told me the graphics card will be upgradable but that will remain to be seen.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

I wouldn't trust an acer to be upgradeable...ANd the problem with upgrading laptop videos isn't the ability to handle an upgrade, it's the lack of upgrades to get. I have a C90 which is MXM-II so it is upgradeable...to nothing. It shipped with the 8600gt and that was the best card to get in it. I could downgrade to an 8500 or maybe a 7700 but there's nothing for me to upgrade to until the C90p comes out and I can get an 8700gt....ho boy...

I know what you mean with laptops graphics cards hard to come by the situation is rediculous and very anti consumer. There must be a market out there for it, its a extremely frustrating situation and it is completely caused by manufactures greed.

I would of bought or built another pc if I had room for one but I already have 2 pc's which at times can be hard to get onto at times so a third is needed and a laptop is the only option. My brother has a 15.4" laptop which I find too small so a 18" should do nicely. Dell are doing the XPS420 base in the UK for £529 with a 10% discount voucher. It has a E8400 cpu and 8800GT card. I would be hard pressed to build it cheaper with its spec.

What hurts me is this laptop is the price of a 50" plasma full H/D
