I just go an external enclosure for my old hard drive (the new hitachi is niiice) and i was running hdtune out of curiosity and it only transfers at .9mbps which makes no sense since benchmarks for other external hdds of the same 5400rpm go at like 30some. Now i had noticed this yesterday when I was transferring files but I just noticed it was kinda slow and didn't think anything of it. I connected a flash drive and tested it and the same result. Now I know my ports are usb 2.0 alienware even touts them as the proverbial "hi-speed" buuuutttt... windows says that I don't have any high speed usb ports installed. So I'm clueless is it some sort of driver or bois thing? or is windows being stupid? please help

Well, Windows is perpetually being stupid, but that's probably not the only problem. Cracks at M$ aside, it sounds like a driver issue. Have you reinstalled Windows since you got the machine, or are using the OEM install? Do you have at least SP1 installed (required for High-speed USB)? Also, could you try transferring some files over the USB2 ports in Ubuntu and see how that goes? That would give us a good base to work with.

Probably a stupid question, but...are you positive the enclosure has a 2.0 interface? How many devices are connected to your PC?

ok first things first-yes the enclosure is 2.0 because: a. the box says so and b. it is running power form the usb and isn't 2.0 the only one that can do that. As of now it is the only external device plugged in.
I have reinstalled windows (on my brand new hard drive) and I have updated all of the chipset drivers. I used the device manager to search for updates for the usb controller and there were none.
I like the idea of testing things in linux do you know of any benchmarking programs like hdtune that work in linux?

Ok I just transfered a 54mb folder of mp3's and it took 42 seconds so that is an average of 1.29mb/s definitely pretty slow (this is in windows)

Yea, thats way too slow. Do you think it could be the cable?
I have a USB 2.0 1.8 " drive connected to my laptop that runs on the USB power, It tests around 19MBs.

No it says "Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658" there are three more with different numbers at the end. And there are also four "USB Root Hub"s

that depends on the motherboard though. There just has to be *a* USB2.0 controller, it doesn't have to be the particular one on your system. :)

Right, that was for example only.

I don't think he has USB 2.0. I re-read his original post, Windows is even telling him he doesn't.

But that could just be because Windows doesn't recognize it (wrong or no driver)

"Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C" :( Seems to be missing, after 2659, 265A, 265B. I have 5 USB Root Hub :) . In Device Mgr, right click on Universal Serial Bus Controller and update driver  !. Should automatically install the 2.0 for you :D

Ok I have sp2 and I have all the most recent update
As far as I know my lappy is supposed to have 3 USB 2.0 slots (according to every discription I can find on the net) but my device manager doesnt have the fifth controller and it doesn't want to update anything. I certainly hope that AW wasn't just touting something they didn't have (but this was only a year ago now).
Does anyone know if there is a place to manually dl the drivers from? Intel? Uniwill (ODM of my lappy)?

just a random idea-there is a newer version of the system bios out (I have 2.01 and 2.03 is out) and would that possibly add support for the harware that I know I have?

    Wouldn't hurt to try

Windows is rubbish. I read repeated standby's/hibernates can mess the system up. Que my laptop decides it only has USB 1.1 ports  And I know it has USB 2 - it worked when I got it and had SP2 installed!!! I'm gonna have to reformat when I get around to it

I'd agree it sounds like Windows can't find the right driver. But so you know USB 2.0 is not necessarily fast. There is USB 2.0 "full-speed" (essentially USB 1.1 speeds, 12Mbps or whatever) and USB 2.0 "hi-speed" (480Mbps, or what is generally thought of as USB 2.0)

    Updated the bios-didn't do anything
I went through all sorts of stuff with the Intel website to find that any i/o controller after 8201DB has 2.0 capabilities. I would assume that FB comes after DB and hence I definitely have 2.0 support. Intel tells you to go to Microsoft update, which I have done and there is nothing there that has anything to do with usb (although I may just go and install everything and see if it is hidden somewhere). This is really starting to annoy and it seems that there is no real way to talk to a person about it (since my warentee is up AW wouldn't help me).

The HD controller of your enclosure has faulted like mine. The only thing left to do is to RMA the enclosure

But I can tell you right now that my device manager doesn't say I have a usb 2.0 controller so whether the controller has faulted or not is irrelevant if the computer itself is having problems.

Well unfortunately the cd didnt have usb drivers I think they must be built into the chipset drivers (the whole 915 platform etc).

BTW I connected the hd to my family's desktop and it transfered fine (15mb/s which is decent) the enclosure works fine.
