Google is the crystal ball that will show you the future.
-
Yeah, but not all people have a gift of succefully using the cristall balls. I looked in it and found only vague 2009-2010. No dates for hardware available for sale.
-
According to Wikipedia, consumer availability is expected in 2010. No real specific details.

It looks like ASUS will be the first company having USB 3.0 in their products. They have the first motherboard for desktops
ASUS P6X58 Premium
and their laptop is here
Asus M50 Laptop
althought the port in the laptop appeared to be non functional
So I think before christmas 2009 and a bit after Windows 7 you will be able to buy a desktop or a laptop -
Is there anything big in 3.0 standard to be waited for?
I checked out Wikipedia and official links, but it is mostly bunch of statistics, predictions and marketing. -
Apart from the fact it's supposed to be far faster compared to the 2.0 standard (and compatible with it), not much.
Although, I am wondering why the delay into 2010? -

Doubt you will see it mainstream until 2011. It will be released in 2010, but not only do you need to have a capable port on a motherboard or add on card, but devices that can support it, and drives that are fast enough to utilize that speed. Some SSDs can do it but they are limited by SATA/300, which means SATA/600 is needed to match the output of USB 3.0.

well, USB 3.0 is trying to beat out firewire....
-
Personally, I don't even see FireWire as competition for USB right now.

my dream future:
pcie and usb3 as the only connectors existing (and only one usb3 type connector).
internal hdd's/ssd's over pcie (much faster than even sata3), as gpu's and all other important cards.
external stuff all over usb3.
everything else: byebye.
that would be perfect.
but afaik, there where some things that annoyed me at usb3.0. have to re-check.
edit: i, for example, still don't get the reason for the b-side connector. that square thing you stick into printers. why not an ordinary connector, too? or a mini connector? why not mini connector only?
i don't get how standards can mess up with such extra things -
My dream is when everything is wireless. Exept power cords, which are all standard and interchangeable.

no, including power. wireless power will come. it may be years away, but it will.
and yes, external stuff is nice to be wireless. -
Apparently the first USB 3.0 motherboard by ASUS has been cancelled without further notice
ASUS cancels P6X58 USB 3.0 motherboard
Probably it will take a bit longer for the USB 3.0 standard until it becomes the mainstream
Usb 3.0
