Hi, I got a black-friday HP Pavilion dv6103nr, was a nice deal. anyhow, my question is:

there is an infrared receiver on the laptop, it is mentioned in the specs, and i can see it right next to the headphone jacks. however, i dont seem to have any control, or use of it. I was hoping to get it running to use my Media Center Remote for it, does anyone know how one would get that to work, and even if not for the MCE remote, get it working for any other type of remote?

i've tried to look all over the web for a solution, but every form of a search i use, just finds links to the sale of any hp laptop, with a infrared lens.

    thanks!

I don't think that the IR port can be used for the MCE remote, but I have never tried. I know that one of the only things that the port will work with is HP's remote, and that is about all that I know of.

It can be used with the MCE remote, but it's pointless because you need windows MCE to get full functionality.

I got it confirmed with HP Support personal. The IR lenses is for the Remote control. It will not work as regular file share / networking.

This IR will work only with the HP remote control. You can not configure this to any other remote control.

And, the remote control used to come along with the laptop, but not in this model.

Hope the above might answer your question on the IR port on this particular laptop.

    Regards

Its the same remote that comes with the dv6108nr that fits into the express card slot for about 20 US from HPs site.

Another way of using this HP remote IR control is during the slides show or presentation. I've tested that in PowerPoint and Acrobat Reader. It works just like your mouse or arrow key. It even has info button for pop up window just like mouse right button. It works in at least 5 feet and angle is good enough for you working around a bit during the presentation.

that does answer my question, thanks for the responses. i know of the remote that can fit in the express card slot, but i dont know if i have any real use for that. sure wish HP made that IR eye more universal ... or at least RC6 compatible, for MCE use. its silly in that HP also sells a MCE remote, but in order to use it on their laptops, or at least my model, you have to get that USB IR receiver. which, isnt a hassle if you put the laptop down someplace in your house and have it plugged into a tv or something, but on-th-go .. not so much.

well something weird has happened, i installed Vista Home Premium, on both my notebook, and my desktop - i had my notebook hibernating - and i was setting up Media Center on the desktop, a few minutes in i turn around and see my laptop is powered on and in media center - appearntly the consumer IR, with Vista drivers detects the Media Center (windows) button on the RC6 controller, and powers on the notebook ... however, once i'm in MC, or any part of windows on the laptop - the remote does nothing - has anyone learned of this occurance? and know if it can be set to actually work as a remote and not as a remote power button?

    -Thanks
