Hi, I am thinking about purchasing a Lenovo Y410P. It comes with a 24GB SSD on top of a 1TB 5400 RPM hard drive. I've heard from others that it is not advisable to install OS on a 24GB SSD and instead it would be better to use the SSD as a cache. In that case, how much performance improvement can I expect? and is it worthwhile to doll out extra $50 or more for that performance improvement?

Not worth the $50 if you expect consistently faster performance... (in real world it will be hit and miss - with one time being 'very fast' and another minute being HDD slow).

Caching drives can provide some improvement vs. a mechanical drive alone, but for 50 I'd say save your money. Do you need the 1 TB hard disk space, because you could just get away with an medium sized SSD and getting a caddy/USB enclosure for the 1 TB drive (or in my case, getting a 256-512 GB SSD).

That's about enough cache to boot up faster, but nothing else. Take that as you will.

Is it worth $200 and the hassle to downgrade size-wise from a 500gb HDD to a 256gb SSD, cache or not?

    In my opinion, yes.

If you shop around you can pick up a 500GB SSD for $350 or less, and I'm talking about premium offerings here...presuming you need that much space on the primary drive.
