Yo, there, whazzup...![]()
Having bought and used my Lenovo G770 I can truly say I am content with it, happy even, as I don't require much, or often much from my machines...
Having said that I am entertaining the idea of installing a hybrid hard drive (Momentus XT 750GB), or something else to make most of the apps load faster and operate faster... Now, I know, most of people would say "GET an SSD!!!"![]()
Not an option yet, as I find it a bit too expensive per GB and an SSD would really be wasted in terms of its potential under my usage...
Sooooooooooo, it came to me that I might install Windows 7 on a SDXC memory card... They can be fast, provide enough space for an OS and some primary apps, so why not??? I tried Google-ing it, but mostly I get results for booting the ISO of Win 7 and then installing it in a normal way/to a normal place...
So, has anybody had any experience with running a Windows OS from a memory card, SDXC or any other kind?
Years ago, I read some article about this guy who opened the laptop up and then did something with USB connectors on the mobo and then fixed there a memory card, connected it to the mobo, and then was able to boot and run Windows from it..

It's kind of a hassle to do this I think, but if you have an mSATA port, you might be able to get a mSATA to SD converter or something. But imo it's a hassle, might as well just use an mSATA or a hybrid drive.

Well, there are very few fast SD cards out there, there are, but like i said, very few. Only a handful and they are quite expensive can reach speeds that approach 100MB/s in sequential operations, the randoms aren't all that extraordinary either compared to a SSD.
Add to that the fact that not all card readers in laptops are capable of reaching those speeds it's definitely not something you should be looking at really.
This isn't exactly recent: SDHC Cards vs Hard Drive vs SSD, however, the basis remains the same.
In short, it's not something would personally ever consider, i'd stick to standard HDDs/hybrids or mSATA cache + HDD.
There is also a reason why SD cards are much cheaper than SSDs aside from the form factor and that is the quality of the memory used too. Something that SSDs have over SD cards, add to that that there is no wear leveling, no garbage collection. Using the SD card for storage isn't a bad idea, but for an OS it's definitely not something i would do. Also if you get to the higher end of the SDXC spectrum in terms of quality and space they won't be cheap either.
Using SDXC as a perm. boot disc for Windows 7?
