Since solid state drives are gaining popularity, one reason for it's supposed durability.I aslo just received my eee 1000H thats still unopened with the regular HDD, 160gb.

I'm wondering if you can harm a HDD if you use any ultra portbale when you are holding it in one hand and typing with the other all while walking around your house or office constantly?I read that you will probably damage it if you run up and down the stairs with it on.

Also, does using a laptop on an unbalanced or slanted base (i.e. a couch or bed) through out a course of long period of time hurt the HDD?

    Thanks.

you should not run up or down steps with an operating laptop in your hands.
Put the system to sleep or into hibernation if you need to move it.
You will not damage the harddrive by holding it with one hand and typing with the other unless you drop the system, or you are holding the part of the laptop where the harddrive is located.
If you decide to do type like this, make sure not to squeeze/hold the system by its harddrive section. Your pressure from holding it could cause damage to the harddrive.

Using a laptop on a slanted surface will not kill the harddrive or harm it.
I think harddrives even work upside down.
The only thing to worry about is overheating when using a system on your bed.
The fabric of the quilt or whatever will block your vents, causing the system to overheat, so put a book or something under your system when using it on the bed, to allow air to flow underneath the system.

Every HDD has a specific Shock Resistance, so unless you don't go above it, your HDD is safe. (Check the Datasheet)

Yes, a HDD will work in any way mounted.
Btw,, my HDD is mounted "upside down" in my notebook, so yeah it won't harm the HDD :)
