Would keeping a notebook running for long periods of time (4 days or more) for intense activities damage it?

Would using a cooler pad and ensuring the room temperature is about 20 C or lower help?

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct section..... Sorry if it isn't :(

It should not be a problem in general (unless you've got one of those poorly tuned Alienwares), though it is a good idea to use a cooler if you want to be on the safe side. I've left plenty of laptops on for days at a time and I've never had a heating problem.

Personally, I wouldn't even leave my laptop unattended if under a full load for a few hours.

My old asus ran 24/7 for months downloading BTs.

My Thinkpad is pretty much run the same way, with the only exception being to put it in standby to bring it to class.

I just make sure to blow out the vents every month.

My old vaio was basically on for weeks at a time, used in the day, downloading at night. Never had a problem.

    T61 now gets same treatment.

If notebooks were that soft where you couldn’t leave them on for a few days there would be a lot of warranty claims!

You might wanna leave the lid open aswell, help keeps the laptop cooler.

lid shouldnt make a significant difference unless your cooling is as bad as Alienware M5*** series.....

As to running at load over a long period of time.. I paid for a system which was advertised as capable of sustained operating at its maximum default performance... why should I settle for less?

leave it away from combustibles just in case. and use a surge protector if you are connecting[physically] it to a modem/router

The lid does make a difference. Many laptops have thermal pads connecting the keyboard tose a thick piece of shin etsu to bridge the gap between the keyboard and any exposed heatpipes making the keyboard a large surface to dissipate heat. The T61 is one example. It's one mod I do to a lot of laptops. The keyboard doesn't get much warmer but the system gets 1-2 degrees cooler.

Thus leaving the lid up about an inch makes a difference.
