I have an old Samsung Q1 Ultra, it has Vista x86 on it, it has touch sensitive buttons for volume/menu and the software does not work on Win7 or later that is why i am stuck on Vista

EDIT: I MANAGED TO GET IT TO WORK ON WIN7

It came with an 60GB PATA Zif HDD but i bought an Zif to mSATA adaptor and bought an second hand Intel 525 120GB SSD to replace it and it works great.

I read that Vista does not support Trim, Is it really needed, Does the ssd not do it internally, does the OS not supporting trim really make a difference.

    Thanks

    John.

@Tinderbox (UK) SSD do some garbage collection; depending on manufacturer and firmware, it's efficiency varies. Overprovision the drive well to be on the safe side. I strongly suggest to give it a try under 10.

I have tried Win10 on it and it works well, but as i said the touch sensitive buttons for onscreen menu and volume only work with Xp and Vista.

Did you try to install the Vista drivers (as a last resort)? Or at least point to their extracted folder after right clicking on the appropriate entry in Device Manager?

There are no problem devices in device manager in Win10 but when i install the menuUI software it does not work.

I have read that other Samsung Q1 owners have had the same problem with Win7 and above, but my Q1 is so old that there is no support any more, all forum thread are ancient.

The software is called "Menu UI (Software) (ver.2.0.3.6)" and can be download below, set os to vista it is in the software section.

    Thanks

EDIT: Below are the files, no driver files unless they can be extracted.

Try installing Win7 (clean) and see if it works there (I would want to try this myself, regardless of what the 'net says). If it does, upgrading to Win10 may keep it working?

I also notice there are two BIOS updates available. Do you have the latest (2009)?

Reading the first post again, just want to say that the Intel SSD you have running is probably one of the best for a non-TRIM aware O/S. :)

Seems like you've tried everything you can for this model.

If it was mine? I'd be donating to a school (the history class) in 3, 2, 1... :)

Looks like the Intel SSD toolbox has an manual trim that can be scheduled to run day or weekly, hopefully that will help.

    Thanks for the help

Is there any reason for that?

Also as for my Q1 being old, you are right i bought it for something to fiddle about with and it has kept my occupied for a while.

    Thanks

    John.

Ime, Intel makes things for real world workflows (and not to simply put bigger numbers on the retail boxes for it's marketing department). They not only provide TRIM, in TRIM aware environments, they also provide GC that is run to actually keep the drive fast and responsive (and not just another checkmark that they boast about). In addition to the manual TRIM found in their SSD software (as you mentioned above).

Old isn't bad. But being obsolete is. Having to use Vista in 2016? Why don't you just imprison me instead? :)

I wouldn't worry about it. The drive has background garbage collection, which should keep you going and if it does visibly slow down, just run manual trim. Assuming this is your secondary computer for light workloads, it would be a waste to buy Win 7 license for it. I run Vista on my work computer for years, never had any problems and since 95 % of time I would be running work related programs, I couldn't care less what OS was underneath. Come to think of it I still have XP computer, which I use as secondary back up, it's slow but it works.

Why did MS introduce trim optimizing if trim on delete does it's job? ;)

Should be fine John. If you are happy with what it does then save your money IMO.

I managed to get the soft button menu software to work with Win7 x86 it gave me an error on first boot, but on second boot it works, so i will make an image using Acronis for a quick clean install when i need it.

    Hi.

Anybody know why i only get 60mb/s on my "Intel 525 120GB mSSD" the read is 80mb/s , the motherboard only has an PATA /100 controller and i am using an ZIF to mSATA adaptor.

I am using Crystal Disk Mark with default and 0x00 fill, I get the same result.

The SSD has an "SandForce's SF-2281 controller"

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6725/the-full-intel-ssd-525-review-30gb-60gb-120gb-180gb-240gb-tested

The "Intel 825 120GB SSD" has an read of approx 500mb/s and write of 250mb/s and limited to the PATA/100 100mb/s ??? so why is my read and write speed different.

If the read is 80mb/s should the write not be 80mb/s also

    Thanks

    John.

Seems like you're at the limit of the hardware to me?

Why are you not getting 100MB/s? Because of overhead (I assume).

100MBs is a max limit, I don't think it accounts for error correction bits, also the fact adapter is used, will slow things down. And since SSD's reading is twice as fast as writing, even with the same overhead either direction, writing will be slower. Other things could come into play also, like bit alignment for example.

If you mean, partition alignment i checked it`s spot on.

Well, with this setup even if you're running Win7+ the TRIM signal won't go through anyway.

Simply set enough OP space (after at least one TRIM or reset) and forget about it. The drive will do just fine.
