I'm about to upgrade the memory on my Dell Vostro 1700. If I use 800mhz memory instead of 667, will the Vostro slow down the memory so that it is usable still? Also any wierd side effects of using faster memory that the memory that the laptop came with other than the 800 mhz memory costing a bit more than 667 memory?

PC2-6400 is backwards compatible with PC2-5300/5400, so you will experience no problems in using DDR2 800 RAM on a board that supports up to DDR2 667.

Yes, that memory will work fine in your Vostro 1700.
